Solimena's *Adam and Eve in Paradise* radiates the lush drama of the Neapolitan Baroque, its figures bathed in warm light against a verdant, Eden-like landscape that feels both intimate and monumental. Francesco Solimena was the dominant painter in Naples during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, a master of sweeping compositions and richly modelled flesh tones that draw on the influence of Luca Giordano and Pietro da Cortona. His technique favoured bold contrasts of light and shadow — a restrained chiaroscuro that gives his figures an almost sculptural weight — while his palette remained warmer and more sensuous than the cooler Roman tradition. Solimena became so celebrated across Europe that princes and foreign collectors sought him out personally, and he accumulated considerable wealth at a time when most painters relied on church patronage alone. The Art Institute of Chicago holds this canvas as a testament to his facility with intimate narrative scenes drawn from scripture.
