Most family commissions start with a photo that is almost right — someone blinked, someone was at university, the light was terrible. None of that matters. Our painters work from as many photographs as you want to send and compose them into one picture, so the finished painting shows the family as it actually is rather than as one particular Tuesday happened to catch it. There are merged groups in the gallery, each one beside the photographs it came from.

Size is really a question of heads rather than walls. Below roughly four inches of canvas per face a likeness stops being reliable, so a couple with two children sits comfortably on 20 × 24″, a family of five wants 24 × 36″ as a floor, and six or more belongs on 30 × 40″. Send the photograph and the headcount and we will tell you which size yours needs before you pay.

Backgrounds are the easiest thing in the picture to change: a kitchen swapped for a plain warm ground, a stranger at the edge left out, a grandparent added from a photograph taken forty years earlier. If someone in the painting has died, that is an ordinary request here rather than an awkward one, and this piece explains how families usually handle it.

It takes three to four weeks to paint, plus delivery. Before anything ships you see a photograph of the finished painting, and if a face is not right we keep working until it is.
