Horses are the ones people worry about, and rightly — the head is long, the proportions are unforgiving, and a portrait that is slightly off reads as wrong immediately even to someone who knows nothing about horses. We paint them from a three-quarter view wherever possible, and we will ask for a second photograph from a different angle so the painter can build the head properly rather than guess at it.
Rosettes, tack, yard colours, a particular field, the show ring — say what matters and it goes in. If the only decent photograph you have is from a competition day with a hundred people in the background, that is fine; the background is the easiest thing in the picture to replace.
What to send us
- Two photographs if you can: one head-on or three-quarter, one from the side.
- Overcast daylight beats bright sun — hard shadows hide the shape of the head.
- Tell us the markings that matter. A blaze or a sock in the wrong place is the one thing owners always spot.
