Wedding day, with the dogPainting
The hardest subject, and the one we paint most.
“A nose a millimetre wrong is somebody else's dog.”
Fur has direction. Eyes have a specific wetness. A nose that is a millimetre out turns your dog into somebody else's dog, and every owner sees it instantly. So the painters work slowly on the head — the eyes, the set of the ears, the exact edge of every marking — and quickly on everything else. That is why the faces come back right.
Nothing is "improved". The white patch that's off-centre stays off-centre. The ear that never sat right, the grey coming through a black muzzle, the tongue that's always out: those are why the painting is of your dog and not of a dog. Painted with fine brushes in a smooth realist technique, so what you see is the dog, not the paint.
What the painter does with yours.
Every coat asks something different of the painter and of your photograph. Find your dog.
Black dogs
The hardest coat to photograph and the most rewarding to paint. A black dog isn't black — it's blue and brown where the light hits, and the painter builds the head out of exactly that. Send a daylight photo, never flash, and the painting will show more of his face than any photograph has.

White and cream
Never flat white. The painter mixes warm and cool whites so the coat has depth and the face has shape. Daylight again, and keep him off a white wall.

Chocolate, red and tan
Chocolate labs and red hounds go muddy in photographs. In paint the coat gets its colour back, with the highlights on the head and shoulders that a phone flattens.

Ticked, brindle and merle
Every spot and stripe is a decision, and the painter follows the pattern in your photograph exactly. That pattern is what your family recognises from across the room.

Long coats
Collies, spaniels, setters: the fur is painted in the direction it grows, in layers, so it reads as hair rather than a shape. A brushed coat paints beautifully; so does a windblown one.

Flat faces and folds
Pugs, bulldogs, Frenchies, Bostons and boxers: the folds and the underbite are the likeness. Photograph at eye level, so the face isn't foreshortened from above.

Grey muzzles and old dogs
The grey stays. An old dog painted young is a different dog. If the photograph is soft or old, send it anyway — a person reads it first and tells you honestly what it can carry.
Puppies
They change by the week. The puppy in the photograph is the one that gets painted, so paint him at eight weeks and you'll have him at eight weeks forever.

Three things, and we do the rest.
Eye level
Kneel. A photo from standing height flattens the face and loses the neck.
Daylight, not flash
Near a window, or outside in shade. Flash puts a white disc in each eye and kills the depth in dark fur.
Eyes sharp
A blurred body or a messy background we can fix. Blurred eyes we can't.

They don't have to be in the same photograph.
Send the best photo of each and the painter composes them together — the same light, the same ground, one painting. The pair below came from two separate photographs. Each extra dog or person is from £35$49€39CA$69A$69NZ$79CHF 39SEK 449NOK 449DKK 299PLN 179, depending on the canvas, and a family portrait can have the dog in it for the same.

Take your time. Any photograph will do to start.
An old print, a phone snap, a photo a friend took — send what you have. A person reads it first and tells you what it can carry. A background can be invented; a face can't, so it's the face that matters.
Painted with the grey muzzle and the cloudy eye if that's how you knew him, or from a younger photograph if you'd rather. About three to four weeks to paint, plus delivery, and you see it before it ships.
Head and shoulders, or the whole dog.
- 16 × 20″
- Head and shoulders. Reads well from across a room; the size most people choose for one dog.
- 20 × 24″
- The whole dog, or a head with real background — the sofa, the beach, the lawn.
- 24 × 36″
- Two dogs, a dog lying full length, or a dog with a person.
One dog is included in every price; the canvas sets the cost, from £220$299€259CA$409A$409NZ$509CHF 239SEK 2,849NOK 2,749DKK 1,899PLN 1,109 to £549$739€639CA$1,029A$1,029NZ$1,279CHF 599SEK 7,149NOK 6,899DKK 4,799PLN 2,759. A different background, the harness off, the ball left in — changes to the photograph cost nothing.

Starting from an old photo?
If it's torn, creased or faded, we can restore it first, free, and you'll see the preview before deciding anything. The painting can then be made from the restored version.

- Arrives unframed, rolled in a tube, ready for any framer near you to stretch and frame.
Answered straight.
Will it actually look like my dog?
That's the whole job. The head is painted slowly from your photograph — the eyes, the ears, the exact edges of every marking — and before it ships you get a photograph of the finished canvas. If something isn't right, it goes back to the painter until it is. Nothing leaves until you've said yes.
Can you paint a black dog?
Yes, and they come out well. A black coat in daylight is full of blue and brown, and the painter builds the head from those. Send a photo taken in daylight rather than flash; a flash photo of a black dog hides the face the painter needs.
My only photo is blurry, old, or taken from above.
Send it. A person reads it within one working day and tells you honestly. Blurred eyes are the one thing that can't be recovered; most other faults — a soft body, a dark room, a messy background — can. If it won't make a good painting, you can send another or have a full refund.
Can you paint two dogs from two different photographs?
Yes. Send the best photo of each and they're composed into one painting with the same light and the same ground. Each extra dog or person is from £35$49€39CA$69A$69NZ$79CHF 39SEK 449NOK 449DKK 299PLN 179, depending on the canvas.
Can you take out the lead, the harness or the garden?
Yes, and it costs nothing. Say so when you order: a plain ground, a different background, the harness off, the collar kept, the ball in.
How long does a dog portrait take?
About three to four weeks to paint, plus delivery. We deliver worldwide and delivery is included; any import duty charged by the destination country is the buyer's. For Christmas, order by the date shown at the top of the order page.
How much does a dog portrait cost?
£220$299€259CA$409A$409NZ$509CHF 239SEK 2,849NOK 2,749DKK 1,899PLN 1,109 for a 12 × 16″ canvas, up to £549$739€639CA$1,029A$1,029NZ$1,279CHF 599SEK 7,149NOK 6,899DKK 4,799PLN 2,759 for 36 × 48″, with one dog included and delivery included wherever you are. Each extra dog or person is from £35$49€39CA$69A$69NZ$79CHF 39SEK 449NOK 449DKK 299PLN 179. Every figure is on the price table.
Is it really hand-painted?
Yes: real oil paint on canvas, by hand, by professional portrait artists, with fine brushes in a smooth realist technique. Not a print, not a canvas transfer, not generated. You get a photograph of your actual canvas before it ships — here's how to tell a hand-painted portrait from a print or an AI image.
Do you paint cats, horses and other animals?
Yes. Cats are on the pet portraits page; horses, rabbits, parrots and everything else with a face are on horses & other animals. Same prices, same process.
Can I have him painted as a lord?
For a real oil painting in costume, say so when you order — the Renaissance dog guide covers which costume suits which breed, and it costs nothing extra. For a computer-made version in a minute, free, try the Sitting Room. It's a picture, not a painting, and we say so.
See him as a Tudor lord first.
The Sitting Room paints your dog into a Tudor, Regency, Dutch or Napoleonic portrait from one photograph, by computer, in about a minute. The first is free. It's a picture, not a painting — but it's a good way to see his face in a frame while you decide.
