Anniversary commissions almost always start with a bad photograph, and that is fine — it is usually the only copy, it has been in direct sunlight since 1987, and the colour has gone orange. A painter is not a scanner. Faded colour gets rebuilt, a crease across a face gets painted out, and a small print becomes a canvas big enough to see from the doorway.

The anniversaries people commission for are the milestones: silver at twenty-five, ruby at forty, gold at fifty, diamond at sixty. The wedding photograph is the obvious source, and for a ruby or golden anniversary it is usually a print in an album rather than a file — which paints perfectly well. The anniversary gifts by year list has every other year and what each one stands for, and there is a whole piece on 40th anniversary gifts for parents.

The two of them on a 16 × 20" canvas is £310$418€358CA$578A$588NZ$718CHF 338SEK 4,048NOK 3,898DKK 2,698PLN 1,558, delivery included. Plenty of families go further and put the children and grandchildren in beside them, each from their own photograph, at from £35$49€39CA$69A$69NZ$79CHF 39SEK 449NOK 449DKK 299PLN 179 a person; with six or more faces a 24 × 36" canvas gives each one room.

Give us three to four weeks, plus delivery. Anniversary work is the one commission people leave too late, and a rushed painting is a worse present than a late one. If the date is tight, tell us at the start and we will say honestly whether it can be done — and if it can't, we'll send you something to wrap in the meantime.

Working from an old print

Photograph the print flat in daylight, no flash — a phone photo of a photo beats a bad scan.
Send the damage as it is. Don't crop out the creases; the painter would rather see the whole print.
Tell us the year and the occasion. It settles questions about clothing and colour the photo can't answer.

Questions, answered.

What are the silver, ruby, golden and diamond anniversaries?

Silver is the 25th, ruby the 40th, gold the 50th and diamond the 60th. A painting sits outside the list, which is why it suits any of them; the full list by year has the rest.

Can you paint from our parents' old wedding photograph?

Yes. Faded, creased and discoloured prints are routine: the colour is rebuilt rather than copied and damage is painted out. Photograph the print flat in daylight and send it as it is.

How much is an anniversary portrait?

A couple on a 16 × 20" canvas is £310$418€358CA$578A$588NZ$718CHF 338SEK 4,048NOK 3,898DKK 2,698PLN 1,558, with worldwide delivery included. Can the rest of the family be added?

Yes, each from their own photograph, however many years apart they were taken. Tell us who goes where and we show you the plan before painting starts.

How far ahead should I order?

Three to four weeks to paint, plus delivery, so six clear weeks before the anniversary. You see a photograph of the finished painting and approve it before it ships.
