Wedding Anniversary Gifts by Year: The Complete UK List

Last updated: September 2026

Wedding anniversary gifts by year

Quick answer: The UK list of wedding anniversary gifts by year runs paper, cotton, leather, fruit and flowers, wood for the first five years, then hits the big milestones at 25 (silver), 40 (ruby), 50 (gold) and 60 (diamond). There are two competing lists — a traditional one that is centuries old and a modern one written by retailers in the twentieth century — and neither is a rule. Most people use the material as a prompt rather than a brief, which is why an anniversary portrait painted from the wedding photograph works at almost any year: it costs £220 to £549 depending on size, and nobody has ever complained that it wasn't made of linen.

The full UK list, year by year

Anniversaries are counted from the wedding date, not the engagement. The traditional column is the older British list; the modern column is the one most high-street shops work from. Where they disagree, use whichever gives you the better idea.

Year Traditional (UK) Modern What actually works
1st Paper Clocks A printed photo book, or the first year's photos off the phone
2nd Cotton China Good bedding, or a cotton canvas print
3rd Leather Crystal A wallet, a bag, a bound journal
4th Fruit and flowers Appliances A fruit tree for the garden — it outlives a bouquet
5th Wood Silverware A carved bowl, a wooden frame, a tree planted properly
6th Sugar Wood Something baked, or a weekend away
7th Wool Desk sets A blanket you'll still own in 2050
8th Salt Bronze Bronze is the more usable of the two
9th Copper Leather A copper pan — the one gift on this list used daily
10th Tin Diamond jewellery First milestone worth marking properly
11th Steel Fashion jewellery Good knives, or a watch serviced
12th Silk Pearls Silk scarf, or a framed textile
13th Lace Textiles Antique lace is easier to find than you'd think
14th Ivory Gold jewellery Ignore ivory. Gold, or anything ivory-coloured
15th Crystal Watches Crystal glassware that gets used
20th China Platinum A proper dinner service, or a painted portrait
25th Silver Silver Silver frame — with something worth framing in it
30th Pearl Diamond Pearl jewellery, or a pearl-toned painting
35th Coral Jade Jade, since coral shouldn't be bought new
40th Ruby Ruby Anything red, or the wedding photo repainted
45th Sapphire Sapphire Sapphire is the last affordable stone on the list
50th Gold Gold Gold-framed portrait, or a party
55th Emerald Emerald Emerald green, applied loosely
60th Diamond Diamond A card from the King, plus something permanent
65th Blue sapphire Blue sapphire Keep it small and personal
70th Platinum Platinum Family gathering beats any object

Beyond 70 the list mostly stops, which is a good indication of how seriously to take it.

Traditional or modern: which list should you use?

The traditional list came out of a European custom of marking long marriages with silver at 25 and gold at 50. Everything in between was filled in gradually, and the modern list was largely assembled in the 1930s by American retailers who noticed that "paper" was a hard thing to sell. That is not a reason to dismiss it — clocks at one year and watches at fifteen are reasonable ideas — but it does explain why the modern column gets more expensive faster.

Two practical points. First, the UK and US lists diverge in the single digits: fruit and flowers is fourth here and linen is fourth there, sugar is sixth here and iron is sixth there. If you are buying for British parents, use the British column. Second, year fourteen is ivory on every old list, and buying ivory is both illegal in most cases under the Ivory Act 2018 and a bad idea. Gold, or simply something the colour of ivory, is the accepted substitute.

The years people actually mark

Most couples ignore the list until a round number arrives. Four years genuinely change how you should be thinking about the gift.

1st — paper

The gift is small and the meaning isn't. Paper is the easiest material on the whole list to do well: a printed book of the wedding photos, the vows written out properly by hand, or the order of service framed. If you want something with more weight to it, a small wedding portrait at 12 × 16" is £220 and is still a photograph, technically.

25th — silver

Twenty-five years is the point at which people start thinking about permanence rather than novelty. A silver frame is the obvious buy, and it's only half a gift — what goes inside it matters more. A lot of couples at this stage have exactly one good photograph of themselves from the last decade and a wedding album they haven't opened since 1999.

40th — ruby

Ruby is awkward. Real rubies are expensive, and by forty years most couples have stopped wanting jewellery. This is the year where the gift usually comes from the children rather than the spouse, which changes the brief entirely — see the notes on what to spend if you are splitting the cost between siblings.

50th — gold

The golden wedding is the biggest one, and the only anniversary most families throw a party for. Gold-plated anything reads as tokenistic; the things that land are a gathering, a photograph of everyone who exists because of that marriage, or the wedding photo brought back to life. If the couple are 60 years married or more, apply to the Anniversaries Office through GOV.UK for a card from the King — it's free, it takes a few weeks, and it only applies to the 60th, 65th, 70th and every year after that.

Where a painting fits on the list

Oil paint is not on any anniversary list, which is precisely why it works — it isn't tied to a year, so it can't be wrong for one. The usual approach is to take the wedding photograph, or a photograph from around the wedding, and have it painted properly.

Practical detail, since this is the part people ask about. We work from whatever photo you have, including old ones that have faded or been photographed off a print. Before the painting ships, we send a photograph of the finished piece and keep painting until you're happy with it — which matters when the source photo is fifty years old and you're not sure it will hold up. The whole thing takes about three to four weeks to paint, plus delivery, so for a fixed date, order at least eight weeks out. Paintings arrive rolled in a tube, unframed, so budget a little extra time and cost for a local framer to stretch and frame it before it goes on the wall.

Sizes and prices: 12 × 16" at £220, 16 × 20" at £275, 20 × 24" at £330, 24 × 36" at £449, 30 × 40" at £489 and 36 × 48" at £549. A portrait of the two of them together is the standard commission; extra people in the frame start at £35 each, which is worth knowing if you want the whole family in a 50th anniversary piece.

Frequently asked

What are the wedding anniversary gifts by year in the UK?

Years one to ten run paper, cotton, leather, fruit and flowers, wood, sugar, wool, salt, copper and tin. After that the gaps widen: crystal at fifteen, china at twenty, silver at twenty-five, pearl at thirty, ruby at forty, gold at fifty and diamond at sixty. The full table above covers every year the traditional British list names.

Do you have to follow the anniversary list at all?

No. It has no official status — there is no governing body, and the modern version was written to sell things. Use it when you're stuck for an idea and ignore it when you have a better one. A gift that refers to the actual marriage will always outperform one that correctly matches a material.

What is the 25th wedding anniversary gift?

Silver, on both the traditional and the modern list. That usually means a silver frame, silver jewellery or engraved silverware. The most common upgrade is to fill the frame properly rather than leave the couple to find a photo for it — our silver anniversary guide goes into what to do with the wedding album at this stage.

How far ahead should I order an anniversary gift that's made to order?

Eight weeks is comfortable for anything hand-made. Once your photograph has passed our check, the painting itself takes about three to four weeks, plus delivery, and before it ships we send a photograph of the finished piece — if anything needs adjusting at that point we keep painting until it's right, which can add a little time. If the anniversary is closer than eight weeks out, order anyway and say so — we'd rather know than have you guess.

What do you buy for a couple who have everything?

Something that refers to their own history rather than adding an object to a full house. An old photograph turned into a painting can't be bought by them for themselves without it being odd, doesn't need storing, and is the only gift on this page that gets more valuable to the family with time.

The short version

Wedding anniversary gifts by year are a prompt, not a rule. Use the UK traditional list for the first ten years when you genuinely need an idea, take the milestones at 25, 40, 50 and 60 seriously, and for the big ones spend the money on something permanent and specific rather than on the correct material. Nobody remembers that the ninth is copper. They remember what was on the wall.
