Animals are harder to paint than people, which is exactly why we do so many of them. Fur has direction, eyes have a specific wetness, and a nose that is a millimetre wrong turns your dog into somebody else's dog. Our painters work slowly on the head and quickly on everything else, which is why the faces come back right.
You can have the portrait straight — your dog on a plain ground, painted the way a nineteenth-century sporting artist would have done it — or you can put them in a red doublet with a ruff collar and hang it above the fireplace to annoy visitors. Both are the same price. The style costs nothing; only the canvas size and the number of animals do.
What makes a good pet photo
- Get down to their eye level. A photo shot from standing height flattens the face.
- Daylight, indoors, near a window. Flash kills the depth in dark fur.
- Eyes sharp and open. Everything else — a blurred body, a bad background — we can fix.
