Every portrait below came from the photograph in its corner — free-licence photographs and one very patient boxer. Nothing was posed for it and nothing was retouched afterwards.

A phone snap is fine, as long as their face is clear and looking at the camera. One pet per photograph.
Pick a century
Tudor court, Regency ballroom, Dutch Golden Age or Napoleonic general — and whether they sit as a lord or a lady.
Watch it paint
Press the button and our computer paints it — usually on your screen within a few minutes, longer on a busy day, and we email it to you too. Free, with our name at the foot. Share it as it is, or keep it at full size for £9$12€10CA$17A$17NZ$21CHF 10SEK 99NOK 99DKK 99PLN 49.
What's free, and what £9$12€10CA$17A$17NZ$21CHF 10SEK 99NOK 99DKK 99PLN 49 buys.
The free portrait is screen-sized and carries our name along the bottom — plenty to share, not enough to print.
£9$12€10CA$17A$17NZ$21CHF 10SEK 99NOK 99DKK 99PLN 49 buys the same portrait at full size with nothing of ours on it, in two versions: one with the title painted beneath the sitter, one plain. Both print beautifully at A3, and the links work for 90 days.
Paying also earns a code worth 20% off a hand-painted oil painting from the same photograph, with your £9$12€10CA$17A$17NZ$21CHF 10SEK 99NOK 99DKK 99PLN 49 back on top, good for 30 days — for when the wall deserves the real thing.
For a pet, £9$12€10CA$17A$17NZ$21CHF 10SEK 99NOK 99DKK 99PLN 49 also makes a thirteen-second film: their photograph painting itself into the portrait, then the portrait coming to life. Yours to post.

Tudor court
Ruffs, pearls and a heavy gold chain, about 1560.
About 1560. A black-and-gold doublet or gown, a white ruff, pearls and a heavy chain, on a dark plain ground. The one most people choose for a dog, and it's easy to see why.
Regency ballroom
Candlelight, silk and a high collar, about 1815.
About 1815. Candlelight and pale columns, an empire-line silk gown or a dark tailcoat with a high collar and a white cravat. The softest of the four, and lovely on a long coat.
Dutch Golden Age
Black silk, a broad linen collar and window light, about 1660.
About 1660. Black silk, a broad white linen collar and window light from the left. The most serious of the four — and the one that makes a cat look like it owns a shipping company.
Napoleonic general
Gold braid, a red sash and a rearing grey horse, about 1805.
About 1805. Dark blue and gold braid, a red sash and epaulettes for a lord; coronation ermine for a lady. The one to choose when you want them to look like they've won something.
It will look like them.
The costume, the light and the setting come from a real painting of the period. The face comes from your photograph — the same eyes, the same markings, the same coat, the same ears, up or down. A boxer stays a boxer, and a tabby keeps its stripes.
We tested it on thirty-six photographs before opening the doors, and every one came back recognisable. If yours doesn't, email hello@paintingsfromphoto.com and we'll look at it.
Before you send a photograph
Is the first portrait really free?
Yes. One free portrait per email address, screen-sized, with our name along the bottom. It's usually on your screen within a few minutes of pressing the button; on a busy day it can take longer, and we email it to you as well.
Is it painted by hand?
No — the portrait is made by a computer from your photograph. It's a picture, not a canvas. The oil paintings we sell are painted by hand from the same photograph, from £220, and paying £9$12€10CA$17A$17NZ$21CHF 10SEK 99NOK 99DKK 99PLN 49 for your portrait earns a code towards one.
What does £9$12€10CA$17A$17NZ$21CHF 10SEK 99NOK 99DKK 99PLN 49 buy?
The same portrait at full size with nothing of ours on it, in two versions — one with the title under the sitter, one plain. Both print beautifully at A3. It also makes a thirteen-second film of the portrait coming to life, yours to post. The download links work for 90 days.
What kind of photograph works?
One pet, facing the camera — eyes open and sharp, in daylight, with the head and shoulders filling a good part of the frame. Send the original from your phone rather than a screenshot. A face turned away or half hidden won't give a likeness.
Can you do people?
Not here: The Sitting Room paints pets. People we paint by hand, in oil, from your photograph — from £220.
Will it actually look like them?
It should — that's the whole point. Their markings, the colour and texture of their coat, their eyes and their ears are all kept from your photograph. If yours doesn't, email hello@paintingsfromphoto.com and we'll look at it.
What does lord or lady change?
The costume, and nothing else. A lady sits in the gown of the century you chose; a lord in its coat or uniform. Choose whichever suits them.
Can I share it?
Yes — that's what the free one is for. WhatsApp, X, Facebook, or save the picture. The shared card is public by design; the full-size files are yours alone.
How long do you keep it?
A free portrait is kept for 30 days, the shared card for a year, and paid files for 90 days. The rest is on our privacy page.
Does it work outside the UK?
Anywhere. It's a download, priced in your own currency at checkout.
Made by a computer from your photograph. The oil paintings we sell are painted by hand.
