A double-sided sheet from the early seventeenth century, this work by Hermann Weyer captures two entirely different human dramas on opposite faces of the same piece of cream laid paper — the quiet intimacy of Adam and Eve beneath a tree on one side, and the charged tension of two men in argument on the other. Weyer was a German draftsman active in the early decades of the 1600s, associated with the refined drawing traditions of the courts of the Holy Roman Empire. Working in pen and black ink, then building depth with gray and brown washes before adding white gouache highlights, he achieved a sculptural quality rarely seen in works on paper of this period. The technique demands extraordinary control: each wash layer must be judged before it dries, and the white heightening applied with precision to lift figures from the ground. The dual-sided nature of the sheet suggests it functioned as a working study — a glimpse into Weyer's private process rather than a finished presentation piece, which makes it unusually candid for a court-connected artist.
