Benedetto Caliari's *Adoration of the Magi* radiates the ceremonial grandeur that defined Venetian religious art in the late sixteenth century, even in its intimate drawing form. Benedetto was the younger brother and close collaborator of Paolo Veronese, working within one of Venice's most celebrated workshops. While he long laboured in his brother's considerable shadow, works like this one reveal his own command of compositional drama and expressive figuration. Executed in pen and brown ink with black chalk, heightened with gouache on green laid paper, the piece demonstrates the Veronese workshop's meticulous preparation — layering line, wash, and white heightening to build a scene of rich tonal depth before a single stroke of paint was applied to canvas. Benedetto continued running the workshop after Veronese's death in 1588, completing several of his brother's unfinished commissions — a testament to how closely their hands and visions were aligned. Our hand-painted oil reproduction translates this work's luminous contrasts and figural energy into the warmth and texture of oil on canvas, giving the composition the physical presence its original drawing format only hinted at.
