Gabbiani's preparatory study for an Apotheosis of Hercules combines the drama of Baroque ceiling composition with the intimacy of a working artist mid-thought — the recto bursting with divine energy, the verso quietly filled with anatomical observations of horses and architectural forms. Anton Domenico Gabbiani was one of the leading painters of late seventeenth-century Florence, closely tied to the Medici court and trained in part under Ciro Ferri in Rome, a principal pupil of Pietro da Cortona. This sheet exemplifies his refined draughtsmanship: brown ink lines define the figures with authority, while brown wash builds depth and atmosphere, and white gouache lifts key passages into light — a technique well-suited to the blue-gray laid paper, which does much of the tonal work itself. The verso's casual sketches of a horse's head and forequarters reveal the methodical preparation behind even his most exuberant compositions. Gabbiani served as court painter to Cosimo III de' Medici, producing grand decorative cycles that secured his reputation across Tuscany and made him one of the period's most sought-after fresco painters. The hand-painted oil reproduction translates this intimate study into a lasting object, preserving the layered tonal range and confident draftsmanship that Gabbiani used to map out divine spectacle on paper.
