Calandrucci's *Assumption of the Virgin* is a study in controlled devotion — figures ascending through soft luminous space, the composition pulling the eye upward with a graceful, unhurried authority. Giacinto Calandrucci was born in Palermo in 1646 and spent the formative years of his career in Rome as one of Carlo Maratti's most gifted pupils, absorbing the classical restraint and delicate figural elegance that defined late Baroque Roman painting. This work, executed around 1703 near the end of his life, demonstrates his command of preparatory draughtsmanship: pen and brown ink layered with wash and white gouache over black chalk, building depth and luminosity through accumulated marks rather than colour. The result reads more like a finished devotional piece than a working study. Calandrucci was so closely associated with Maratti's manner that contemporaries often struggled to distinguish their hands — a testament to how thoroughly he had absorbed his master's approach to sacred subjects. Our hand-painted oil reproduction translates that delicate tonal language — the warm browns, the lifted whites, the soft architectural forms emerging from shadow — into the richness and texture of oil on canvas, bringing the intimacy of the original drawing into a format made for walls and lasting ownership.
