Antonio Zucchi was a Venetian-born painter who became one of the leading decorative artists of the Neoclassical movement in Britain, working closely alongside the architect Robert Adam on some of the most celebrated interiors of the eighteenth century. This drawing demonstrates his exceptional draftsmanship — the gray wash layered over black chalk, with subtle lifts of white gouache, creates a luminous depth that gives the stone columns and robed figures a sculptural weight far beyond the modest scale of the paper. His figures inhabit classical settings with easy naturalism, never stiff or theatrical. Zucchi married the celebrated Swiss-born painter Angelica Kauffmann in 1781, and the two shared a creative and professional partnership that placed them at the heart of London's Neoclassical art world.
