Fragments represents the refined visual language of the Ica culture, a Pre-Columbian civilization that flourished along the southern coast of Peru between roughly 1000 and 1476 CE, now preserved in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The Ica people developed one of the most distinctive artistic traditions in the ancient Americas, marked by intricate geometric patterning, stylized figural motifs, and a controlled but expressive use of colour. Their works — whether rendered on ceramic, textile, or other surfaces — carried deep cultural meaning, encoding cosmological and social narratives through repeated formal elements that rewarded close looking. The title Fragments speaks honestly to how we encounter this material today: as partial evidence of a world that was largely disrupted by Spanish colonisation in the late fifteenth century.
