Boeckhorst's *Holy Family* radiates an intimate tenderness that sets it apart from the grander devotional works of its era — a quiet moment rendered with extraordinary delicacy in pen, graphite, and touches of gouache. Johann Boeckhorst worked at the heart of Antwerp's Baroque scene, closely aligned with Rubens and Jordaens, yet he cultivated a distinctly softer, more lyrical sensibility. This drawing demonstrates his refined draughtsmanship: the layering of brown ink over graphite, lifted by ochre and white gouache highlights, creates a luminous warmth that feels almost painterly despite the modest materials. The ivory laid paper itself becomes part of the composition, breathing light into the shadows. Boeckhorst was known in Antwerp by the nickname "Lange Jan" — Long John — on account of his unusual height, a detail that somehow makes his gentle, intimate subject matter all the more striking by contrast. The hand-painted oil reproduction translates the work's essential quality — that sense of warm, glowing light holding the figures together — into a medium that honours both the composition's intimacy and its place within the grand tradition of Flemish devotional art.
