This dramatic nocturnal scene captures the moment an angel awakens Saint Peter in his cell, flooding the darkness with an otherworldly light that leaves the surrounding guards utterly oblivious. Produced in the Netherlands around 1600, the work belongs to a period when painters across the Low Countries were refining the art of candlelit and torchlit compositions — a fascination that would reach its height with the Utrecht Caravaggisti in the following decades. The anonymous master demonstrates considerable skill in rendering luminous fabric and the contrast between illuminated flesh and deep shadow, hallmarks of late Mannerist religious painting in the region. The panel support, common among Netherlandish painters before canvas became the dominant ground, lends the colours a particular depth and stability that has preserved the work well across four centuries. The subject — drawn from Acts 12:1–11 — was among the most frequently depicted prison miracles in Counter-Reformation art, employed to affirm divine authority over earthly power at a time when questions of religious freedom carried genuine political weight. The hand-painted oil reproduction honours every nuance of the original: the delicate gradations of candlelight spreading across stone and cloth, the stillness of the sleeping figures, and the quiet tension between human vulnerability and divine intervention.
