Giuseppe Grisoni was a Flemish-born painter trained in Florence under Benedetto Lutti, later elected to the prestigious Accademia di San Luca in Rome — a mark of genuine standing in the eighteenth-century European art world. Working in gouache over black chalk on ivory laid paper, he brought a painter's sensibility to what might otherwise be a draughtsman's exercise: the medium allows for dense, layered colour that mimics the opacity and depth of actual stone, making the marbling feel tactile rather than merely decorative. Grisoni divided his career between Italy and England, carrying with him a refined Continental eye that informed everything he produced.
