Few eighteenth-century drawings match the raw, kinetic energy of Oudry's depiction of men and hounds driving wolves into the open — a scene that pulses with desperation and controlled chaos in equal measure. Jean-Baptiste Oudry was the preeminent animal painter of Louis XV's France, appointed royal painter and later director of the Gobelins and Beauvais tapestry works. His mastery lay in capturing weight, movement, and the psychology of animals in extremis — qualities on full display here in the dramatic interplay of ink, wash, and gouache on blue laid paper. The blue ground was a deliberate choice, letting the white gouache highlights do the work of light in a way oil on canvas rarely permits. "Rien de Trop" — nothing in excess — was the motto Oudry applied to a series of compositional studies, and this third panel lives up to it: every figure earns its place, and nothing decorative distracts from the violence at the center of the frame. The hand-painted oil reproduction translates that tense, silvery atmosphere into a medium built to last, preserving the drama of Oudry's original while bringing warmth and depth to a work that rewards long looking.
