Mère Grégoire is a portrait of rare warmth and solidity — a large, laughing woman rendered with the kind of unflinching affection that only a painter of Courbet's conviction could pull off. Gustave Courbet was the defining voice of French Realism, and this canvas shows exactly why. Where his contemporaries idealised their subjects, Courbet planted his figures firmly in the real world — flesh heavy, expressions unguarded, surfaces painted with a loaded palette knife as much as a brush. The result is a picture that feels lived-in, almost tactile, the sitter's presence filling the canvas without apology. The subject is widely believed to be the proprietress of a well-known Paris café, a figure of local legend whom Courbet clearly painted with genuine fondness rather than sociological detachment.
