This delicate sheet of ink and gouache on hand-drawn graph paper is at once a functional workshop document and an accidental work of art — a weaving draft that has outlasted the silk it was made to produce. Germain Frères were active in the Lyon silk trade during the latter half of the eighteenth century, a period when France dominated European luxury fabric production. A mise-en-carte was the critical bridge between a designer's pattern and the loom: each coloured square on the graph paper instructed a weaver exactly which warp threads to raise, translating visual imagination into physical cloth. The precision required was extraordinary, and the finest mise-en-cartes were treated almost like proprietary blueprints, closely guarded within workshops. The Lyon silk industry's reliance on these point-paper drafts directly influenced the development of the Jacquard loom in the early nineteenth century, whose punched-card mechanism mechanised the logic these drawings encoded by hand.
