A scene of civic founding rendered with quiet authority, this drawing depicts the legendary Roman king Numa Pompilius in the act of codifying the laws that would shape Roman religious and civic life for centuries. Giovanni Battista Galestruzzi worked primarily as a draftsman and engraver in seventeenth-century Florence and Rome, and this sheet reflects his command of the classical tradition he spent much of his career translating into print. The technique is characteristically Italian — pen and brown ink built up with wash, then lifted with lead white and pale pink gouache against the cool tone of blue laid paper. That combination of warm ink and cool ground creates a luminous depth that is difficult to achieve in any other medium, giving the figures a sculptural weight that feels almost archaeological. Blue paper was a favored support among Italian draftsmen of this period precisely because it allowed artists to work both darker and lighter than the mid-tone ground, compressing the full tonal range into a single sheet. The hand-painted oil reproduction translates that interplay of tone and light into paint, preserving the compositional gravity of the original while bringing the scene into a medium built to last generations on a wall.
