Old Testament Figures in Paradise is a luminous devotional work that captures the serene grandeur of heavenly space through warm, suffused light and softly idealised figures. Francisco Bayeu y Subías was one of the most accomplished Spanish painters of the eighteenth century — a court artist under Charles III and later director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. Trained in the classical Baroque tradition and influenced by the decorative elegance sweeping Europe at the time, Bayeu brought a refined naturalism to religious subjects, blending spiritual solemnity with an almost gentle tenderness. Bayeu was Francisco Goya's brother-in-law, and the two shared a long professional relationship — Goya credited Bayeu as a significant early influence on his development as an artist.
