Annibale Carracci's *Pietà* is a deeply felt study in grief — the Virgin cradling Christ rendered with a tenderness that feels both devotional and profoundly human. Carracci was one of the driving forces behind the Italian Baroque, pushing back against the artifice of Mannerism in favour of direct emotional truth drawn from life. This work, executed in pen and brown ink with warm washes and white gouache heightening on a tan ground, demonstrates his exceptional draughtsmanship — light and shadow built through layered wash, the white gouache pulling forms forward with quiet authority. It reads less like a preparatory sketch and more like a finished meditation, complete in itself. Carracci and his cousins founded the Accademia degli Incamminati in Bologna, a school that shaped an entire generation of Baroque painters including Guido Reni and Domenichino — making works like this part of one of the most influential artistic lineages in Western art.
