Portrait of a Gentleman is a quietly commanding work — the sitter's composed gaze and richly detailed clothing conveying the self-possession of a man accustomed to power and position. Venetian painters of the mid-sixteenth century were Europe's most sought-after portraitists, prized for their mastery of oil glazing techniques that gave flesh warmth and fabric an almost tactile weight. Working in the tradition of Titian, the anonymous hand behind this panel built up luminous layers of pigment to create depth that earlier tempera or fresco simply could not achieve. The designation "Venetian" reflects the honest scholarship of the Art Institute of Chicago — this is a work whose quality speaks clearly even when its maker does not. The painting's survival in an American institution owes much to the great collecting era of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Renaissance panels moved from Italian private collections into the hands of public museums, where they have remained ever since. Our hand-painted oil reproduction is executed on linen canvas using traditional materials and slow-drying oils, faithfully recreating the tonal warmth and surface presence that make the original worth studying at length. It is made to be lived with.
