Portrait of a Nobleman carries the quiet authority of a man accustomed to being observed — composed, finely dressed, and rendered with the intimate precision that only miniature painting demands. Peter Cross was among the foremost English miniaturists of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, working in a tradition shaped by the great Samuel Cooper, whose influence is visible in Cross's sensitivity to likeness and his restrained but luminous handling of light.
