Rest on the Flight into Egypt carries the quiet intimacy of a private devotional image — the Holy Family pausing in their flight, rendered in a warm interplay of shadow and light that feels both tender and monumental. Sigismondo Caula was a Modenese painter of the late Baroque period, working in the long shadow of Guercino, whose dramatic use of chiaroscuro left a deep imprint on the Emilian tradition. This drawing — executed in brush and brown ink and wash, with white gouache highlights over faint black chalk on brown laid paper — reveals Caula at his most intimate. The toned paper itself becomes an active element, sitting between the warm ink shadows and the cool white highlights to create a middle ground that reads as natural, ambient light. It is the kind of study that shows a painter thinking through weight and tenderness simultaneously. Caula spent much of his career in Modena, producing altarpieces and devotional works for churches and private patrons throughout the Emilian region, though his drawings remain among the most admired aspects of his output.
