This intimate study captures the quiet gravity of gathered apostles, their draped forms arranged with the tender naturalism that set Correggio apart from his Renaissance contemporaries. Antonio da Correggio worked primarily in Parma during the early sixteenth century, developing a style of extraordinary softness and psychological warmth — closer in spirit to Leonardo's sfumato than to the sculptural rigidity of his Central Italian peers. The combination of brown wash, gouache, and lead white on laid paper was a favoured approach for preparatory work, allowing Correggio to build luminosity and shadow simultaneously, sketching out the figure groupings that would eventually translate into monumental fresco compositions. Saint John the Evangelist occupies the lower register, a compositional arrangement echoing the hierarchical staging Correggio employed in his celebrated dome frescoes at San Giovanni Evangelista and Parma Cathedral. The lead white highlights visible in the original have oxidised over centuries, shifting from bright accents to a subtler tone — a quiet reminder of the drawing's age and survival. A skilled hand-painted oil reproduction translates the delicacy of this work onto canvas, preserving the layered warmth of Correggio's draftsmanship in a medium built to last.
