Sleeping Congregation captures a scene of gentle, satirical humanity — a church full of parishioners nodding off mid-sermon, rendered with the kind of wry affection that makes it impossible not to smile. John Thurston was one of the most accomplished British illustrators of the early nineteenth century, celebrated for his refined draughtsmanship and his ability to translate the spirit of an image into delicate, layered works on paper. Here, working in pen and gray ink with brush wash and touches of white gouache, he brings both precision and softness to a subject rooted in the satirical tradition of Hogarth — whose original "Sleeping Congregation" print of 1736 had lodged itself firmly in the British cultural imagination. Thurston's version shifts the mood from sharp social critique toward something warmer, almost fond. The work now held at the Art Institute of Chicago is a fine example of how Regency-era illustrators interpreted earlier satirical subjects, filtering them through a more genteel sensibility suited to the period's taste for polished book illustration.
