Whistler's *Study* (1894) is a quietly commanding work — a lithograph that distils his lifelong pursuit of tonal subtlety into a single, understated image on cream laid paper. By the 1890s, Whistler had become deeply invested in printmaking, approaching lithography with the same painterly sensitivity he brought to his famous Nocturnes. Where other artists treated the medium as a means of reproduction, Whistler used it to explore atmosphere and restraint, coaxing soft gradations from the stone that feel closer to charcoal drawing than mechanical print. His work in this period reflects a deliberate stripping away — fewer marks, more silence, an almost Japanese sense of negative space. Whistler was awarded the Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, a recognition that cemented his influence on the generation of modernists who would follow him. Translating a work of such tonal delicacy into oil on canvas is no small task, but the hand-painted reproduction honours the original's restraint — the soft midtones, the spare composition, and the sense that every mark was considered before it was placed. Displayed against the right wall, it carries the same contemplative stillness that drew collectors to Whistler's work over a century ago.
