Tahitian Landscape glows with the humid warmth Gauguin encountered on his first voyage to French Polynesia, rendered here in the soft, unpredictable tones of a monotype pressed from a glass matrix. Created in 1894, shortly after Gauguin returned to France from his initial two-year stay in Tahiti, this work reflects a period of intense artistic reckoning. Rather than conventional oils or watercolour on paper, Gauguin painted directly onto glass and transferred the image to cream wove paper, then enriched the result with touches of gouache — a process that produced the luminous, almost dreamlike quality the image carries. The technique allowed accidents and transparencies that brushwork alone could not achieve, lending the landscape a quality closer to memory than observation. The work is now held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, one of several Tahitian works Gauguin produced as he processed his time in the islands before eventually returning to the Pacific for good in 1895.
