Temperance, one of the four Cardinal Virtues, is rendered here with quiet authority — a figure that commands through stillness rather than drama. The work comes from the Veronese school, a tradition shaped by the rich pictorial culture of northern Italy, where draftsmanship was prized as both a discipline and an art form in itself. This sheet — worked in brush and brown wash over red and black chalk, then lifted with white gouache highlights — reflects the layered approach of Italian Renaissance workshop practice, where drawings served as refined studies as much as finished objects. The interplay of warm chalk tones against the tan paper gives the composition a luminous, almost amber quality that oil paint alone rarely achieves. Allegories of the Virtues were a staple of Italian courts and ecclesiastical commissions throughout the Renaissance and Baroque periods, serving as moral instruction through visual means. Temperance in particular — often shown moderating wine with water, or restraining appetite and passion — carried considerable weight in an era that understood excess and restraint as perpetual opposites. The hand-painted oil reproduction translates this intimate, paper-based work into a new material life, preserving the delicate gradations of light and shadow that define the original's exceptional surface while giving the composition the presence it deserves at scale.
