Luca Giordano's *The Abduction of the Sabine Women* pulses with the controlled chaos that defines high Baroque drama — bodies in motion, light cutting through shadow, and a compositional energy that pulls the eye across the canvas without rest. Giordano was the most celebrated Neapolitan painter of the seventeenth century, a virtuoso who absorbed everything from Ribera's raw naturalism to Rubens' swirling theatricality and made it entirely his own. His handling of light is particularly striking here: warm golden tones give the figures a sculptural weight while the loose, confident brushwork keeps the whole scene in breathless motion. Few painters of the period could sustain that tension between grandeur and spontaneity across a canvas of this ambition. Giordano earned the nickname "Luca fa presto" — Luca works fast — a well-documented tribute to his extraordinary speed and output across a career that took him from Naples and Venice to the Spanish royal court in Madrid.
