Tintoretto's study for *The Assumption of the Virgin* crackles with upward momentum, the figures barely contained by the page as the Virgin rises in a swirl of attendant forms. Jacopo Tintoretto worked in Venice during the height of the Counter-Reformation, when religious commissions demanded pictures that could move congregations as much as instruct them. His drawing method was unusually systematic: he built small wax models, lit them with candles, and sketched obsessively to resolve compositions before committing to canvas. This sheet — pen and iron gall ink worked over with brown wash and white gouache highlights — shows that process in action, with light and shadow already fully considered in miniature. Tintoretto kept notebooks of such studies throughout his career, and the Art Institute's collection holds several that reveal just how much resolved thinking lay behind his apparently spontaneous finished works. Because the original is a drawing rather than an oil painting, our craftsmen interpret the work's underlying visual energy — its dramatic foreshortening, the push and pull of dark wash against bright heightening — translated into richly layered oil on canvas. The result is a piece that honours the compositional intelligence of the original while giving it the warmth and depth that paint alone can provide.
