The Poet's Garden radiates the luminous calm Van Gogh found in the public garden beside his lodgings in Arles, its cypress trees and winding paths rendered in those characteristic swirling strokes that seem to give the very air a pulse. Painted in the autumn of 1888, this work belongs to a period of intense productivity when Van Gogh was producing a canvas almost every day under the blazing Provençal sun. He built up the surface with thick, directional impasto — short, energetic marks for foliage, longer undulating strokes for the paths — creating a texture you can almost feel from across a room. The palette, dominated by deep greens, warm ochres, and passages of violet shadow, shows his growing confidence in colour as emotional language rather than simple description. Van Gogh intended the series of garden paintings to decorate the Yellow House in anticipation of Paul Gauguin's arrival, naming them after poets he admired — a small, hopeful gesture from one of art's most turbulent friendships. The hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas captures that surface energy faithfully, preserving the weight and rhythm of the original brushwork that reproductions on paper or screen invariably flatten.
