The Vase of Tulips is one of Cézanne's most quietly arresting still lifes — a modest arrangement of flowers rendered with an intensity that far exceeds its subject. Cézanne painted still lifes throughout his career, using them as a laboratory for his evolving approach to form and colour. Rather than capturing a fleeting impression, he worked slowly and deliberately, building surfaces through layered, directional brushstrokes that give objects a sense of weight and solidity unusual in flower painting. In The Vase of Tulips, each bloom feels architecturally considered — heads tilting at angles that create tension and balance across the canvas simultaneously. Cézanne is known to have used artificial flowers in some of his still-life sessions precisely because he needed more time than fresh blooms allowed — a telling detail about how methodically he approached even the most intimate subjects.
