This tender devotional composition brings together the Virgin and Child with two of Catholicism's most beloved saints, rendered with an intimacy that feels less ceremonial than genuinely human. The work comes from the circle of the Carracci family, the Bolognese dynasty whose academy helped pull Italian painting away from the contortions of late Mannerism and back toward warmth, clarity, and observed life. Working in pen and ink with brown wash and white gouache heightening, the draftsman here builds form through layered tone rather than hard outline — a method the Carraccis championed as a way of thinking through composition before committing paint to canvas. The squaring across the sheet in black chalk confirms this was a working drawing, built to be transferred and scaled up for a larger devotional work.
