Painted in the last decade of the sixteenth century, this mythological scene brings together Venus, Mars, Cupid, and the Three Graces in a softly lit landscape that radiates the warm sensuality of the Venetian tradition at its most refined. Domenico Tintoretto was the son and principal pupil of the great Jacopo Tintoretto, and he absorbed both the dynamic figure work and the luminous, amber-toned palette that defined the family workshop. Working in Venice during a period of intense artistic competition, Domenico developed a gift for idyllic mythological subjects — figures rendered with fluid brushwork and placed within atmospheric, receding landscapes. In this canvas, the grouping of goddesses and the reclining Mars creates a compositional rhythm that feels at once ceremonious and intimate. Domenico collaborated so closely with his father that attribution between the two has historically been a matter of debate among scholars, and this painting is among those that have passed through reassessment over the centuries before settling under his name.
