Francesco Albani's *Virgin and Child Adored by Saint Francis* is a devotional work of quiet tenderness, its intimate scale and luminous surface drawing the viewer into a moment of sacred stillness. Albani trained under the Carracci in Bologna and absorbed their reform programme — a return to naturalism and emotional directness after the artifice of late Mannerism. He became known for an unusually lyrical touch, and that quality is fully evident here. Painting on copper rather than canvas allowed him to build up translucent glazes with a precision impossible on textured ground, producing skin tones and drapery of jewel-like clarity. The medium suits the subject: copper's smooth, reflective base lends the figures an inner warmth, as though lit from within. Albani was so admired in his own time for this vein of graceful religious feeling that contemporaries nicknamed him "the Anacreon of painting," associating his work with lyric poetry's capacity to move without overwhelming.
