Niccolò di Pietro Gerini's *Virgin and Child* is a quietly commanding devotional image — its gold ground and tender figural arrangement carrying the full weight of late Trecento Florentine piety. Gerini was a prolific Florentine painter working in the tradition of Orcagna, and his output shaped the visual language of devotion across churches, confraternities, and private altarpieces throughout the late fourteenth century. Working in tempera on panel, he built his figures with the precise, layered technique of the Byzantine-influenced Florentine school — crisp drapery, deliberate gilding, and a calm hieratic presence that rewards sustained looking. This panel, now held at the Art Institute of Chicago, was originally created as an object of private devotion, designed to be contemplated up close. The work was transferred from panel to canvas at some point in its history, a procedure that speaks to how seriously later collectors valued its survival — a common fate for fragile Trecento panels whose original supports had deteriorated.
