Whistler's 1877 etching of Wych Street captures a corner of old London that would vanish within a generation — the crooked medieval thoroughfare off the Strand was cleared to build the Aldwych in the early 1900s, making this image an inadvertent act of preservation. Whistler was at the height of his printmaking powers in the 1870s, producing intimate street scenes with a directness and economy that set him apart from the grander architectural engravers of the era. The "foul biting" technique — where acid is allowed to work unevenly across the copper plate — gives the image its gritty atmospheric texture, with shadows pooling in doorways and the street receding with confident looseness. Whistler's etchings of London were widely celebrated during his lifetime; his 1878 libel suit against John Ruskin, who dismissed his work as flinging "a pot of paint in the public's face," only deepened public fascination with him — he won the case, though was awarded just a farthing in damages. This hand-painted oil reproduction translates that etched intimacy into pigment, preserving the tonal depth and unhurried street-level atmosphere that make the original a quietly remarkable document of Victorian London.
