Few drawings from the Italian Mannerist period capture movement and mystery quite like this one — a young warrior caught mid-action, his face turned away, one hand lifting a heavy curtain as if about to step into another world entirely. Francesco Salviati was among the most inventive draughtsmen of sixteenth-century Florence and Rome, a contemporary and rival of Vasari who brought a theatrical restlessness to everything he touched. This work, made around 1550–55, exemplifies his mastery of mixed media: pen and brown ink combined with brush and wash, then lifted with white gouache highlights over a black chalk underdrawing. The result is a figure that seems to breathe — muscles suggested through layered tone, drapery alive with tension. Salviati spent years working for the Farnese and Medici families, absorbing influences from Michelangelo, Raphael, and his travels to Venice and France, all of which feed into the sophisticated spatial drama on display here. Now held at the Art Institute of Chicago, the original is a study in intimacy and technical brilliance that rarely leaves the print room.
