Henry George Hine's 1871 watercolor captures the open, rolling light of the South Downs with a quiet authority — a landscape observed with the patience of someone who knew these hills deeply and returned to them often. Hine devoted much of his career to the chalk ridges and wide skies of Sussex, and this work shows why his reputation in that subject was so firmly established.
