"And Shut the Chamber Up, Close, Hush'd and Still" is a work of deliberate restraint — a monochromatic meditation in black, grey, and white gouache on a warm cream board that seems, quite literally, to hold its breath. Will Hicock Low trained in Paris in the 1870s under Carolus-Duran, the same atelier that shaped John Singer Sargent, absorbing the French tradition's emphasis on tonal control and atmospheric precision. Where many American painters of his generation chased vibrancy through colour, Low was equally at home finding emotional weight through shadow and line alone. His career spanned fine art and illustration without apology, and this small-scale gouache shows how naturally those two worlds coexisted in his hands. The title is lifted from Keats' "The Eve of St. Agnes," a poem Low returned to across his career — drawn, it seems, to its imagery of secrecy and hushed longing, which suited his instinct for quiet, interior feeling. The Art Institute of Chicago holds the original, a piece that rewards close looking precisely because it asks so little of you at first glance.
