Bordighera captures the sun-drenched Italian Riviera town with a vibrancy that feels almost hallucinatory — dense palm fronds, terracotta rooftops, and a luminous sky rendered in Monet's most uninhibited palette. Monet traveled to Bordighera in early 1884, working in secret so as not to be overshadowed by his friend Renoir, who had visited the region the previous year. He produced around 40 canvases during his two-month stay, pushing his use of colour to new extremes — greens edging into violet, pinks bleeding into gold. He wrote to a friend that he was "fencing with the sun," struggling to translate the Mediterranean light into paint without the results looking garish. The finished works showed he had succeeded: the colours are vivid but never cheap. Monet himself considered the Bordighera series among his most technically demanding, later citing the trip as a turning point in his understanding of light and atmosphere.
