This intimate study of the legendary Greek poet Homer carries the quiet gravity of a subject who shaped Western storytelling for over two millennia. Though the artist remains unknown, the work reveals an exceptional command of layered drawing techniques — brown wash establishes the broad, sculptural form, while red and black chalk build depth and texture across the aged face, and delicate traces of white gouache catch the light on brow and cheekbone. The ivory laid paper lends the whole composition a warmth that suits its ancient subject, giving the image the feeling of something uncovered rather than made. Homer's blindness was not incidental to his legacy in the ancient world. Philosophers and poets took it as confirmation that true vision was inward — that the man who conjured the siege of Troy and Odysseus's wanderings did so by seeing what ordinary eyes could not.
