This elegant drawing captures one of the most celebrated moments of chivalric virtue in French history — the knight Pierre Terrail, Seigneur de Bayard, turning away a fortune out of principle alone. Created by an unknown hand in pen and black ink with brush and gray wash, heightened with white gouache on cream laid paper, the work belongs to a tradition of preparatory and commemorative draughtsmanship that flourished around the court culture of early modern Europe. The squared graphite grid beneath the composition suggests it was intended as a study for transfer or engraving, lending it a purposeful, architectural quality that sits in quiet contrast to the drama of the scene. The restrained tonal range — ink, wash, and white — gives the figures a sculptural weight rarely achieved in works on paper. The anecdote depicted is drawn from the chronicles of Jacques de Mailles, Bayard's companion and biographer, who recorded how the knight refused 2500 ducats offered by a Spanish commander, saying that honour was its own reward. The story became canonical in histories of French knighthood for centuries. The hand-painted oil reproduction translates the drawing's fine tonal modelling and compositional precision into the richer, more luminous language of oil paint, making it a compelling piece for any collection with an interest in Renaissance history or chivalric tradition.
