Xugu's 1897 album captures the quiet authority of a painter who had spent decades refining a style that felt entirely his own — angular, spare, and alive with restrained energy. A former Qing military officer turned Buddhist monk, Xugu spent much of his later life in Shanghai, where he became a central figure in the city's vibrant artistic scene. His brushwork broke from orthodox literati conventions: forms are often fragmented, lines slightly trembling, compositions stripped to their essential gesture. In this album of 25 leaves, ink and light washes of color work together with the calligraphy to create a unified meditation — image and text not illustrating each other, but breathing in the same rhythm. Xugu was notably reluctant to sell his work, giving paintings away to friends while remaining famously independent of wealthy patrons — a stubbornness that only deepened his reputation among collectors after his death. This hand-painted oil reproduction translates the album's intimacy onto canvas, preserving the delicacy of Xugu's ink lines and the subtle warmth of his colour while giving the work the physical presence it deserves on a wall — a fitting tribute to one of the Qing dynasty's most distinctive and quietly radical voices.
