This album leaf pair — ink and light color brushwork set alongside inscribed calligraphy — offers an intimate glimpse into one of the Qing dynasty's most singular artistic voices. Xugu (1823–1896) was a Buddhist monk-painter who came to define the eccentric wing of the Shanghai School. Working in the final decades of the Qing, he developed a style markedly his own: angular, spare brushwork with a quality often described as "frozen," lending his subjects — goldfish drifting in still water, squirrels perched on pine, solitary plum branches — an otherworldly stillness. The pairing of calligraphy with painting was a classical Chinese convention, and Xugu used inscription not as afterthought but as compositional counterweight, the written characters carrying as much visual tension as the painted image. The album, held at the Art Institute of Chicago, was produced in 1897, the year after Xugu's death, suggesting these leaves may represent a posthumous compilation of his work and associated inscriptions — a tribute assembled by those closest to his circle. The hand-painted oil reproduction translates this quiet, meditative work into a new medium while preserving the delicacy of the original's tonal restraint and the careful interplay between word and image that defines Xugu's legacy.
