This album leaf pairs Xugu's delicate brushwork with calligraphic inscription in the classical Chinese tradition where image and written word were considered inseparable expressions of the same artistic vision. Xugu — born Zhu Huairen and later ordained as a Buddhist monk — was one of the most singular voices of the late Qing period. Working in Shanghai during a time of tremendous cultural upheaval, he developed an immediately recognisable style: spare, eccentric, and quietly melancholic. His ink lines carry a trembling, almost hesitant quality that was entirely deliberate, and his use of light color washes gave his compositions an airy restraint quite different from the bolder Shanghai School painters working around him. This album, completed in 1897, demonstrates his mastery of the leaf format — each page a self-contained meditation on form and text in dialogue. Xugu is known to have spent years as a military official before renouncing that life entirely for Buddhist monastic practice, a rupture that clearly shaped the contemplative stillness running through his mature work. This hand-painted oil reproduction translates the tonal subtlety and gestural precision of the original album leaf onto canvas, preserving the quiet authority that makes Xugu's work feel both ancient and remarkably intimate.
