This album of twenty-five leaves draws together the delicate brushwork of one of the Qing dynasty's most distinctive painters with calligraphy in a format that treats image and text as equal, intertwined voices. Xugu was a Chan Buddhist monk who came to painting late, developing a style so personal it became immediately recognizable — angular, slightly restrained, with a cool economy of line that set him apart from the more flamboyant tendencies of the Shanghai School he inhabited. His ink work on paper tends toward a hushed precision: light washes of color anchoring compositions that feel meditative rather than decorative. An album format like this one suited him well, allowing paintings and inscriptions to breathe across facing leaves rather than competing on a single surface. Xugu was known for his painted goldfish, squirrels, and prunus blossoms — subjects he returned to throughout his career with a quiet obsessiveness that gave even small-scale works a sense of accumulated feeling. Translating Xugu's ink and paper sensibility into a hand-painted oil reproduction presents a genuine creative challenge, and the result honors both the precision of his line and the restrained palette that makes this album so quietly arresting — rendered with care for the subtlety that defines his work.
